World Digital Library

History: An initiative led by the U.S. Library of Congress in cooperation with UNESCO and partner libraries worldwide, it was launched to promote international and intercultural understanding.
Functionality: This free resource offers access to thousands of significant primary materials from countries and cultures around the globe, including manuscripts, maps, rare books, photographs, and sound recordings. Content is browsable by place, time, topic, and type of item.
Future Plans: The WDL continues to expand its collection by digitizing and adding new historical treasures from its global network of contributing institutions.
